🎯 The core idea
An Elementalist running Ethereal Knives with dual wands, stacking Heralds and Golems. EK got a huge buff in 3.29, and the whole build is built around one thing: projectile speed, so that Nimis makes every cast hit twice and covers two full screens of clear.
Damage comes from three multiplicative packages layered on top of each other: the Herald package (Bringer of Ruin + Lost Unity + tattoos ≈ 5× Herald effect), the Golem package (free mana sustain, crit, defences), and the Pinpoint + Overloaded Intensity + Apex Mode gem combo (≈ 220% more damage from two support gems).
Important caveat from the author: this is not a full build guide — it is a day-one character overview, and the showcased version is in the multi-mirror range. A full guide plus a budget version are promised later.
Short version: 3 pillars
- Projectile speed → Nimis double hit. EK's own 33% more projectile speed plus wands push you past the ~2.5k threshold where Nimis-returned projectiles hit a second time. That is a straight ×2 on damage and the reason clear reaches two screens.
- Elementalist Heralds + Golems. One ascendancy node solves mana completely (Lightning Golem), Bringer of Ruin turns Heralds into a ~5× multiplier, and Lost Unity's Herald of the Hive roughly doubles damage again.
- Pinpoint + Overloaded Intensity. Two support gems and one jewel socket (Apex Mode) give roughly triple damage — the strongest part of the setup and cheap to copy.
This is a pure map blaster / magic find character: ~240% item rarity, 189% movement speed, and no guard skill. Defences are deliberately average.
1. What changed for EK in 3.29 (1:27)
- +2 projectiles — 13 → 15 base.
- Base crit 6% (was 10% required — now much easier to crit-scale).
- Added damage effectiveness 20% → 250%, plus roughly 15–18% more base physical damage.
- Quality now gives 20% more projectile speed (30% with the new socket system) — the single biggest change, and the reason the Nimis double-hit is reachable.
- Better level scaling, like most spell gems this patch. Last quality tier adds +2 projectiles but is not baked in.
Why wands and not Charlatan (2:18)
Nearly everyone is playing Charlatan. The author skipped it on purpose: Charlatan is only better for Legion / Eternal Conflict-style content, and has an awkward ramp-up at the start of a map. For regular mapping and Breach, plain EK with dual wands is the better build. A staff is a viable alternative if you want block, but wands win on projectile speed.
Because base EK now hits so hard, you use base Ethereal Knives, not Ethereal Knives of Massacre.
2. PoB numbers (3:15)
| Stat | Value | Note |
|---|---|---|
| DPS | 102M single hit | ≈ 200M with the Nimis double hit, before buffs |
| DPS with Headhunter | ≈ 3× more | HH buffs cap crit and add a lot of phys-as-extra-elemental |
| Projectile speed | ≈ 3.1k | ≈ 2.5k is the minimum for the Nimis double hit |
| Life / ES | ≈ 3k / 3.6k | No guard skill |
| Max hit | 45k ele / 8.4k phys | "Nothing special" — day-one gear |
| Evasion | 8k (≈ 40% evade) | + 20% block from dual wielding |
| Movement speed | 189% | Sublime Vision (Haste) + Onslaught + Tailwind |
| Item rarity | ≈ 240% | Chest + helmet; can go higher by dropping damage |
EK at max travel covers ~15m — two screens — with 20+ projectiles in a full 360°. The author calls it one of the best clearing builds of the patch and was running 100% Delirium 8-mod maps with it.

Pierce only — the author tried chain and fork and found two Pierce is already enough clear for the content he runs. On the chest: roughly 200–300 div to make, plus ~200+ div for the tailoring orb; divining it near-perfect can cost a mirror by itself.

5. Gem links (12:45)
Main 6-link — Ethereal Knives
- Apex Mode (unique jewel, one socket) makes spells that gained Intensity recently gain another every 0.5s. Combined with Pinpoint, you generate Intensity constantly while moving drains it — which keeps Overload permanently at max during mapping.
- In PoB, Pinpoint alone reads as ~220% more damage because it enables Overload. Two support gems and one jewel socket ≈ triple damage.
- Overloaded Intensity is a Mirage-league support, so this combo only became possible recently — it is the cheapest big multiplier in the build.

6. Clusters & Jewels (17:04)
| Time | Jewel / cluster | |
|---|---|---|
| 11:33 | Medium clusters — Empowered Envoy + Endbringer, for Herald buff effect. Stack as many as you can. | watch ↗ |
| 17:10 | Shock-avoidance jewel with an Abyssal socket — abyss jewel + a nearby node give 100% chance to avoid being shocked; the jewel itself carries corrupted-blood immunity. Ailment immunity solved in one slot. | watch ↗ |
| 17:37 | Large cluster (Natural Affinity area) — mana, life, projectile speed, crit chance, Herald buff effect. A regular version works; the fancy one just gets two extra nodes. | watch ↗ |
| 17:53 | On-kill recovery — 30 life on kill, 30 ES on kill, 2% ES on kill, mana on kill from the flask. Critical for a mapper: on-kill effects work through no-regen and less-recovery mods. | watch ↗ |
| 18:18 | Defence-for-attributes jewel — big increased evasion and ES; the reduced attributes are free because of Caspiro. | watch ↗ |
| 18:23 | Caspiro jewel placement — the spot that also grabs Particle Perfection and Arcane Conversation is more point-efficient than the Mind over Matter spot. | watch ↗ |
| 18:40 | The Caspiro jewel itself — a 5-prop roll: spell damage, crit multi, chance to avoid being shocked, cast speed ×2. Combined with the Pain Attunement node via Impossible Escape. | watch ↗ |
| 18:58 | Remaining large clusters — one generic damage cluster, one leech cluster (Doryani's Lesson + a regen notable), plus one point of ES leech. | watch ↗ |

8. Notes & caveats
- Nimis is non-negotiable. Without it you shoot only forwards and lose the double hit — roughly half your damage and most of your clear.
- Hit the projectile speed threshold first. Below ~2.5k projectile speed the double hit doesn't happen and the whole build falls apart. Wands over staff for exactly this reason.
- Build physical, not elemental. Herald of Purity and Herald of Ash only pay out on a physical spell — that's the whole reason EK is the vehicle here.
- On-kill recovery over regen. Life/ES/mana on kill keeps working through no-regen and less-recovery map mods.
- Defences are the weak point. 45k ele / 8.4k phys max hit with no guard skill. The author is considering block or Saboteur-style EHP later.
- Cost: the showcased character is multi-mirror. The chest alone is ~500–600 div, and even the "budget" PoB is expensive because of the Herald tattoos.
- Expect Lost Unity and Golem-stacking uniques to spike in price — commenters flagged this within hours of the video going up.
- Several viewers called this a league starter candidate, but the author explicitly framed it as a day-one min-max character, not a starter.
- The build is very visually and CPU heavy (full-screen EK + Herald of Ash overkill + 100% Delirium). Multiple commenters mentioned performance concerns.
- A fuller build guide with a crafting walkthrough and a real budget version was promised by the author as a follow-up.

Frequently asked
What is the whole build built around?
Projectile speed. Past roughly 2.5k the projectiles returned by Nimis hit a second time — that is a straight ×2 on damage and the reason clear reaches two screens. The showcased character runs ≈3.1k.
Where does the damage actually come from?
Three multiplicative packages: the Herald package (Bringer of Ruin + Lost Unity + tattoos ≈ 5× Herald effect), the Golem package (mana sustain, crit, defences) and the Pinpoint + Overloaded Intensity + Apex Mode gem combo (≈ 220% more damage from two support gems).
Wands or Charlatan?
Charlatan is only better for Legion / Eternal Conflict-style content and ramps up awkwardly at the start of a map. For regular mapping and Breach, plain EK with dual wands wins on projectile speed.
Base Ethereal Knives or Ethereal Knives of Massacre?
Base Ethereal Knives. After the 3.29 buffs the base gem already hits hard enough that the transfigured version is not worth it.
Is this a budget-friendly build?
No. The author explicitly says this is a day-one character overview and the showcased version is in the multi-mirror range; a full guide and a budget version were promised later. The cheap part to copy is the Pinpoint + Overloaded Intensity gem setup.
